KHAO LAK

WEDNESDAY 23rd:   As usual when Jack's about, awake at dawn. Made coffee whilst Aom attended to 'his majesty' and off for breakfast at 07:20
Very good food options available and very well laid out. Copious amounts of fruit, salad, cereals and a variety of cooked food too including fish. Staff very attentive, too much so at times but nice. As usual Jack was stealing the show and attracted the Thai ladies who fussed over him and took turns to pick him up.
After breakfast it was a change of clothes into swim-wear as we opted to get down onto the beach again.
Very hot and we had to find shade under a palm tree to avoid cooking in the hot sun. I took to a swim in the sea followed by a return to one of the beach-side pools.
Unfortunately, the weather forecast for today was spot-on; it clouded over at about 13:00, and by 13:30 it was raining. By 15:00 it was thundery with torrential rain so we were forced back indoors.
The plan was to get down to the beach-bar for happy-hour but that plan came to nothing as Jack was playing-up and taking him into a restaurant didn't seem that good an idea. So, it was room-service again and dined in our villa. This meant an early-to-bed situation.

THURSDAY 24th:   The day dawned bright, hot and sunny. We endured a brief session down on the beach until it got too hot.
Decided on a walk into Khao Lak and take a look at the police-launch boat that was swept nearly a mile inshore when the 2004 tsunami devastated the coast. When I visited in 2007 the the boat was as it was dumped by the tsunami rammed up against some trees. It looked awesome and one could imagine the strength of the tsunami to have swept such a large boat so far inland. However, for some reason, the boat has been righted, stuck onto concrete stands and surrounded by a silly little moat filled with shallow water. This has completely ruined the effect and has reduced the drama to nothing.

After the stranded boat visit the heat and humidity was taking its toll so we dropped into a coffee shop for some iced coffee and then ambled back to Mukdara.
After Jack's sleep-session we took him down to one of the main pools for him to splash about. Alas, this was curtailed by the arrival of massive ominous black clouds which rapidly dumped their cargo of liquid onto us. So it was a short-lived pool session.
Late afternoon we strolled up to reception and booked a taxi into the main part of Khao Lak which sported a supermarket of sorts; the only place we could buy milk for baby Jack. Job done we then sneaked a quick beer in one of the bars on the main street and then opted for a pizza restaurant nearby. Aom dined on a (expensive) steak whilst I ate a lowly but tasty pizza. As usual, Aom having scoffed her steak dinner promptly attacked on my pizza. This brought some memories back when I first took Aom out on a date. I took her to a fairly swish restaurant when she had steak I had a gourmet pizza. No sooner had she devoured her huge steak she pinched great slices of my pizza. I remember thinking then... "God, what have asked out to dinner? ... an eating machine?"
We soon found a taxi to take us back to Mukdara.

A reminder of the 2004 tsunami disaster. I do hope this advice doesn't become necessary.

FRIDAY 25th:  Dawn was a grey and miserable one. Down to breakfast at the beach restaurant where huge waves were breaking onto the sand. Usual hearty breakfast followed by a session at the beach massage place. A relaxing foot massage was just the job. Not to be outdone, Aom decided she wished to partake but opted for a Thai massage... OUCH!.
Considered stretching out on the beach side but black monsoon clouds on the horizon and coming our way changed our minds. By mid-afternoon the heavens opened and a tropical downpour ensued which only reduced to steady rain which kept on falling for the rest of the day.
Rather than feeling trapped in our villa we decided on using the umbrellas and going out of the resort for dinner. Plenty of restaurants to choose from; spoiled for choice in fact. Had a beer or two in a bar as an appetizer then literally next door for quite a good meal.
