RETURN TO BANGKOK

... and back to the UK.

Page 11

THURSDAY 28th APRIL:
We were picked up by our mini-bus for the long trip back to Bangkok at 08:00. Two additional passengers accompanying us; one of Aom's uncles and colleague.
Fearsome heat still with us during the couple of stops for refreshments, etc. Arrived at our appartment in Bangkok at around 4pm. An event free journey.
First job after checking in was to complain to the mangement about our room. I clearly booked for 3 people but were ushered into a room with only two beds, 2 sets of towels and an a/c which did not work properly. I was offered a more suitable room which at least had a sofa that could be converted into a bed for Jack.
Jack and Aom popped up to the roof-top swimming pool for a dip; I opted for a shower.
A change of clothes and we were out in Soi 4 where we did a mini bar crawl before ending up at one of our favourite bars, Hilary1. Here we had another beer and had dinner here too. Finally ending the evening in a bar in Soi 8.

This is when I received a message from Air France to say our return flight had been changed. Air France did their utmost to say the flight was merely delayed but they were lying!
Our original flight was due to leave on Sunday which was actually cancelled; it was brought forward 24 hours forcing us to leave on the Saturday instead.
We were furious.
It took nearly 4 months to get what was rightfully owed to us out of Air France. I had to take the matter to the Aviation ADR to persuade Air France to pay what was rightfully due to us.
They tried every conceivable trick. Trying to get away with the minimum flight distances [see below], and then trying to trick by paying out ONE passenger instead of THREE.

Compensation amounting to

  • (a)£220 for all flights of 1500 kilometres or less.

  • (b)£350 for all flights between 1500 and 3500 kilometres

  • (c)£520 for all flights not falling under (a) or (b).

  • Per passenger.

BKK to MAN is 9600 kilometers

FRIDAY 29th APRIL:
Up and about at 07:00. Aom and Jack went to the rooftop pool for a dip before breakfast which we ate at a bar down the road; good food.
Later in the morning we hopped into a taxi to Bangkok’s Sea Life (Water World). This is a very impressive “aquarium” with all manner of sea animals, from turtles to penguins and from sharks to manta rays.
Sea Life far exceeds anything I’ve ever seen in UK with tanks up to 6mts deep. There’s even trips in glass-bottomed boats available. Jack really enjoyed his time here.
Jumped a taxi for the trip back to Asok where Jack & I were dropped off with Aom continuing to do some last-minute food shopping in Khlong Toei Market. I just hope can find room in the available cases we have and she doesn’t get nabbed by customs in UK.

Above are various photos taken around Bangkok. Note the tangle of cables in the top left photo.
This 'birds-nest' of wiring can be seen all over Thailand.

SATURDAY 30th APRIL:
Suitcase packing was the order of the early hours. Most was done the night before so there wsn't an awful lot to do.
Final checks and it was a case of lugging the baggage down to the lobby. We didn't bother with a breakfast as we reckoned to get something at the airport.
In fact, our taxi to the airport was early so off we went. Journey to Suvarnabhumi Airport was one the quickest I've done. Traffic wasn't too bad and our driver hammered along.
Check in at the airport OK and we were able to make use of the Priority Lane thrugh security check.
We got a decent breakfast in the lounge and boarded around 10:45.
Our return flight was with Air France which meant our stopover was in Paris. This turned out to be a tedious flight of over 12 hours. These flights are normally around the 10 hour mark but there were head winds and also the fact that the plane had to circle around Ukraine because in 2022, the Russian invasion of Ukraine had meant the usual route over that country was ill-advised. This adds an hour to the journey.
Arrived at Paris with nearly 3 hours to wait for our connecting flight to Manchester.
