SONGKRAN in BANGKOK
MONDAY 15th
Up bright and early and down for a decent breakfast.
Later in the morning we walked down Sukhumvit Road with the intention of going to the Robinsons store to get Jack some decent sandals. Oops! Having walked the 1km in the heat we got to the shop only to find it does not open until 11:00am. So we had to trudge back; I needed a shower as I was dripping wet with sweat by this time.... wish it had been water.
Dossed in our apartment for an hour and venured out again but, again it was a wasted trip as we couldn't find what we were looking for.
It was lunch time by this time so we tried Soi-8 and, again, got soaked en-route and ended up sitting in a bar for lunch in very soggy clothes. There is one good thing, however, one dries off pretty quickly in the 36°C heat of Bangkok.
Eventually, got back to the apartment and stripped off the soaking wet stuff and dried ourselves off.
Late afternoon we were out again but better prepared. We were wearing swim-stuff mainly and I had a cap and goggles as some degree of protection... still got a complete drenching though.
This time we all got stuck into the action and doing our damnest to soak each and everyone we came across. Outside most establishments (including our own apartment block) there was a small army of water-throwers armed with huge guns, hose-pipes and buckets all to be refilled from large water drums, some with blocks of ice in them. It really was great good-hearted fun.
A great pizza in Hilary1 ended this particular evening.

The author fully armed and ready for water combat.
Below is movie footage I managed to take without the camera getting a soaking.

- TOP: Water frivolities in Soi-8.
- BOTTOM: Aom ready for action. Note the pint of Guinness in the left-hand pic.
This meant it was the end of the official Songkran festival, but some people don't know when to stop (mainly farangs) and we half expect some more water treatment tomorrow.
